Navigating dental care involves various procedures and technologies, with dental X-rays being one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in modern dentistry. These images allow dental professionals to see what lies beneath the surface, helping to identify issues that may otherwise go untreated during a visual examination.
At Elite Dental Aesthetics in Reno, NV, we utilize cutting-edge digital X-ray technology to provide comprehensive care while prioritizing your safety and comfort. Dr. Adams and our team believe in spending quality time with each patient, ensuring personalized attention and treatment plans created for your unique needs.
What Are Dental X-Rays?
Dental X-rays (radiographs) are diagnostic images that show the teeth, bones, and supporting tissues within your mouth. These images capture what cannot be seen during a visual dental examination, revealing hidden dental structures, malformations, and early signs of disease.
Our professionals often focus on rectifying issues created by previous dental work. Our advanced digital X-ray system plays a crucial role in helping us provide exceptional care.
Types of Dental X-Rays
Several types of dental X-rays serve different diagnostic purposes:
- Bitewing X-rays: Display the upper and lower teeth in one region of the mouth, especially used to detect decay between teeth
- Periapical X-rays: Display the entire tooth from crown to root, helpful for identifying abnormalities in the root and surrounding bone
- Panoramic X-rays: Capture all teeth on both the upper and lower jaw in one image, useful for planning treatments like implants or extractions
- Cone Beam CT (CBCT): Provides detailed 3D images of teeth, soft tissues, and bone in one scan.
Dr. Adams excels in cosmetics, comprehensive restorative dentistry, implant dentistry, oral surgery, CAD/CAM dentistry, fixed prosthodontics, and advanced bonding techniques. Our state-of-the-art CBCT technology enhances our ability to plan and execute these procedures with precision and accuracy.
The Benefits of Digital X-Rays
At Elite Dental Aesthetics, we go beyond conventional dentistry, offering personalized care and solutions to support your unique smile. Our investment in digital X-ray technology reflects this commitment through several key benefits:
Reduced Radiation Exposure
Digital X-rays expose patients to significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays—up to 90% less. This makes them a safer option for all patients, particularly children, pregnant women, and those who require frequent X-rays.
Enhanced Image Quality
Digital technology produces sharper, more detailed images that can be enhanced, enlarged, and optimized to reveal subtle changes in dental structures. This improved clarity helps us detect problems at their earliest stages.
Immediate Results
Unlike traditional X-rays that require developing time, digital images appear instantly on our computer screens. This allows for immediate discussion of findings and more efficient treatment planning during your appointment.
Environmentally Friendly
Digital X-rays lessen the need for film processing chemicals, lead foil, and other materials that can harm the environment, making them an eco-conscious choice.
When Are Dental X-Rays Needed?
Dental X-rays may be recommended in various situations:
- New patient examinations to establish baseline oral health
- Regular check-ups (frequency varies based on your oral health history)
- When symptoms of dental problems appear
- Before procedures like root canals, extractions, or implant placement
- Monitoring growth and development in children and adolescents
- Evaluating the progression of periodontal (gum) disease
We determine the need for X-rays on an individual basis, taking into account your unique dental health, risk factors, and specific treatment needs.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe?
Dental X-rays involve minimal radiation exposure, especially with our advanced digital technology. To put this in perspective, a full set of digital dental X-rays exposes you to less radiation than you would receive from a cross-country flight.
We follow stringent safety protocols, including using lead aprons and thyroid collars when appropriate, to further minimize exposure. Our approach prioritizes obtaining essential diagnostic information while keeping radiation doses as low as possible.
